Holding is still struggling with a long injury (Picture: Getty Images)‘Last year [Granit] Xhaka, Mesut [Ozil] and Nacho [Monreal] were working as captains. But after Aaron Ramsey and Petr Cech left — and possibly Laurent Koscielny — I will want more.‘An English player who grew up in our academy can understand the English spirit and Arsenal values. These are the qualities and more [we want].‘We are really happy with his [Holding’s] progress. We need his performances as a centre back. [Before] he had his injury he was really playing with big performances.’More: FootballRio Ferdinand urges Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to drop Manchester United starChelsea defender Fikayo Tomori reveals why he made U-turn over transfer deadline day moveMikel Arteta rates Thomas Partey’s chances of making his Arsenal debut vs Man CityHolding didn’t grow up in the Arsenal academy, joining the club from Bolton Wanderers in 2016, but as Emery mentioned him specifically, he is certainly in contention. The centre-back has been out since December with an ACL injury and will miss the start of the season as he continues his recovery. The only other English players at Emery’s disposal are Carl Jenkinson, Calum Chambers, Reiss Nelson, Joe Willock, Eddie Nketiah, Emile smith Rowe and Matt Macey, none of whom are likely recipients of the armband.MORE: Arsenal face competition from Everton for Wilfried Zaha transferMORE: Mesut Ozil names the Arsenal youngster he expects to have a ‘big season’ Advertisement Advertisement Comment Metro Sport ReporterFriday 19 Jul 2019 4:48 pmShare this article via facebookShare this article via twitterShare this article via messengerShare this with Share this article via emailShare this article via flipboardCopy link148Shares Rob Holding and Ainsley Maitland-Niles in contention to be one of Arsenal’s club captains this season, says Unai Emerylast_img read more
