In two tweets sent on Thursday, September 28, he implied that the media treated him unfairly for his response to assist hurricane-battered Puerto Rico, a US territory severely impacted by Hurricane Maria: Over the weekend, Trump persisted in his position that the “fake news” media was propagating myths about devastation in Puerto Rico in a series of 24 tweets, six of which directly attacked the media. Trump lashes out at media after failed endorsement in Alabama On September 30, President Trump also referred to the media as “fake news” for covering the Republican primary Senate race in Alabama. This tweet was a reaction to the media coverage after his endorsed candidate, Luther Strange, failed to secure the Republican nomination for the campaign to fill Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ empty Senate seat. Sarah Palin renews legal action against the New York Times Since his presidential campaign, Trump has called for the “opening up of libel laws” in order to make it easier to sue outlets like the New York Times or the Washington Post for stories he sees as “purposely negative.” Palin’s persistence in pursuing the NYT for defamation could be interpreted as an indirect consequence of the anti-media attitude permeating the current administration. On Monday, September 25, Sarah Palin and her legal team filed a new motion to reopen her defamation case against the New York Times, claiming the judge did not operate normal procedures. In a new motion to reconsider, Palin states that she believes she wasn’t given a fair chance to defend her argument. The case was based on an article published by the Times’ editorial board shortly after the June 2017 shooting at a congressional baseball practice in Virginia that wounded four, including one Republican congressman. The editorial mistakenly associated the previous 2011 shooting with Sarah Palin’s political action committee’s map of several congressional districts, which used stylized crosshairs as targets. The article was corrected two days later, with the NYT publicly stating that there was no correlation between Sarah Palin’s PAC and the shooting. Her case was first closed on August 29, as Judge Rakoff of the US District Court stated that claims of defamation must be used selectively, so journalists can continue publicly challenging public figures. The United States ranks 43rd out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2017 World Press Freedom Index after falling 2 places in the last year. For the latest updates, follow RSF on twitter @RSF_en. The recovery of the housing market continues at a slower-than-expected pace due to weak inventory, slowing demand, and rising prices, according to Auction.com’s Real Estate Nowcast for March 2015 released on Tuesday.March’s Real Estate Nowcast predicted that existing home sales for March would fall between 4.83 and 5.12 million on a seasonally adjusted annualized basis. The target number for existing home sales of 4.97 million is an increase of 1.9 percent month-over-month and 5.8 percent from March 2014.”The housing market is continuing to recover, but at a slower, more incremental pace than what most people had hoped for in 2015,” Auction.com EVP Rick Sharga said. “Three main problems continue to prevent more robust growth: extraordinarily limited inventory, especially at the entry level of the market; lower affordability, as home price increases have significantly outpaced wage growth; and tight credit for all but the most highly-qualified borrowers. This adds up to an especially difficult ecosystem for first-time homebuyers to navigate, and we continue to see less home sales to that segment of the market than what we’ve seen historically.”The report found that the target sales price for existing homes was $204,165 in March, a year-over-year increase of 3.8 percent. While home prices are increasing, their growth is decelerating, likely due to a realization of the recent weakness in sales, according to Auction.com.According to Auction.com’s chief economist, Peter Muoio, the deceleration of price growth could slow affordability deterioration, thus boosting home sales – especially if the predicted wage growth comes to pass.”Despite some recent softness in several economic indicators, the US economy – especially the labor market – appears to be on solid footing,” Muoio said. “Unemployment is descending, voluntary quits are increasing, and consumer confidence has breached the 100 index level mark, bringing it firmly back into ‘normal’ territory. These are all positives for future housing demand and we continue to expect the housing recovery, now in a winter-like dormancy, to show signs of growth as the year progresses.”Auction.com’s Real Estate Nowcast included findings similar to those in Fannie Mae’s March 2015 Economic and Housing Outlook released on Monday, which reported slower GDP growth in the first quarter due to “temporary factors,” among those being a weak inventory. Fannie Mae forecasted that wage growth would catch up to employment gains before the end of the year and that the economy would “drag housing upward.”Recent reports by the National Association of Realtors (NAR) also fall in line with the forecasts of Auction.com’s Real Estate Nowcast. February existing home sales were at 4.88 million, according to NAR, which falls in the rate of Auction.com’s revised range of 4.87 to 5.19 million for the month. NAR’s reported existing sales home price of $202,600 for February was close to Auction.com’s forecasted price of $201,077 for the month – a year-over-year increase of 7.5 percent.Click here to see a video of Auction.com EVP Rick Sharga discussing the latest Nowcast. Ghana’s first skeleton Olympian, Akwasi Frimpong, twice qualified for the finals during the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation Pyeongchang InterContinental Cup this week in Pyeongchang, South Korea. It is the same track where Frimpong made history for his country and began his drive to become the Hope of a Billion when he competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics. Frimpong’s results this week showed just how far Frimpong has come as a skeleton athlete on the world stage. In 2018, Frimpong finished 30th out of 30 athletes. This week, Frimpong finished 19th and 20th out of 24 athletes beating countries from the Netherlands, Belgium, South Africa, Luxembourg, and New Zealand. The results come despite not having a sliding coach. As his successful sliding season wraps up, Frimpong competed in 12 races and qualified for the finals eleven times. Frimpong currently ranks 76th out of 150 skeleton athletes in the world. He can still move up in the world rankings since only 7 best races are now counted on the world rankings with one more to be added by next weekend. “I made some big improvements this year,” Frimpong said. “I’m proud of what I have accomplished, but there is still so much work ahead of me before the 2022 Olympics. I hope in the upcoming season I can find the support I need to have a sliding coach to make bigger strides for Ghana.“ Qualifying for the Olympics is going to be extremely difficult if I don’t have a sliding coach and the resources of other countries. I trust something good will happen I just have to keep working hard and stay relentless.”“For now, I plan to take a couple of days off to be with my family then start training to prepare for next season. I want to thank my head sponsor, Ghana Gas, whose support has been critical to my growth this season. “Team Murdock Hyundai from Murray, Utah made my traveling to training locally possible since 2017 and my new sponsor, Forever Living Products International has been supporting me with their amazing Aloe Vera products which help with my recovery. Finally, I have to thank everyone who has been part of the Hope of a Billion story this season.”

15 September 2011South African retailer Woolworths has formed a joint venture in Tanzania and Uganda with Tanzanian businessman and former franchise partner Ali Mufuruki, in an effort to accelerate its expansion into the rest of the continent.“Joint ventures with local partners is the new business model for our pan-African expansion plans,” Woolworths’ retail operations director Glenn Gilzean said in a statement last week. “We are moving away from the franchise model we had in the past.“It’s not only a better profit model for our business, but it’s also better for our customers.”Increasing store sizesWoolworths currently has one store in Uganda and three in Tanzania, and will add another store in Uganda and a further two in Tanzania by the end of the year.Woolworths aims to open 16 stores in African countries this year, taking the total number of stores to 60 in the current financial year. Woolworths also intends to open stores in Nigeria and Angola. The new stores will be larger than current ones – retail space will increase by 42% in the current financial year and by an estimated 145% over the next three years.“I am delighted to be part of this joint venture with Woolworths, to grow this market and offer our customers the choice and quality Woolworths is famous for,” said Mufuruki. “Also, new stores will create much needed employment and be good for the economy.”Major opportunities for growthGilzean said the company regarded trading beyond South African borders as a major opportunity for growth, and believed it would deliver a meaning contribution to the group’s profit. He said Woolworths was also confident about the growth prospects of its investment in Uganda, Tanzania and across Africa, pointing out that consumer spending now accounts for more than 60% of African GDP, and that this figure would increase with the growth of the upper and middle income groups.“Our joint ventures mean we can deliver customers the best retail offering possible tailored to local market needs,” he said. “Our partners bring knowledge of local trading conditions and we bring the quality, value, innovation and fashion our South African customers know and appreciate.“It’s the best of both worlds.”Larger selection of merchandiseWoolworths has refined and improved its merchandise offering for customers in selected African countries, and customers can now look forward to a larger selection of fashion and general merchandise. This includes formal wear, children’s wear, beauty products and casual wear, including the Woolworths Re: and Studio: W fashion brands which have recently been re-launched in South Africa.Woolworths has had a presence in African countries for over 10 years and currently has stores in Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.SAinfo reporterWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? Essential Reading! Get my 3rd book: Eat Their Lunch “The first ever playbook for B2B salespeople on how to win clients and customers who are already being serviced by your competition.” Buy Now Each of these four imperatives ensures that your sales force is effective at the individual level. They’re all necessary to building and sustaining a high performing sales force.A Prospecting Plan that Opens Opportunities: It’s one thing to expect your salespeople to prospect. Providing your sales force with a prospecting plan and the necessary tools to build the relationships that open opportunities is quite another. I told the story here about one sales organization that provided their salespeople with “all the leads they could handle” by throwing the telephone book on their desks. The sales force needs to know and understand their real targets. They need tools to nurture and open relationships. They need ideas that create value for their prospective clients. And they need a campaign that allows them to succeed overtime by persisting (and not by merely being a nuisance). If you want the sales force to do more prospecting, then you need to provide them with the plan for doing so.Differentiation with a Difference: I can’t tell you how many salespeople I’ve asked who have no answer for the question, “What makes you and your offering different?” If they can’t answer this question when I ask, I doubt they do any better when a prospective client asks. But even if a prospective client never asks directly what makes you different, it’s your differentiation that drives a wedge between you and your competitors. It’s the differences that make a difference for your clients that make you worth paying more for. Differentiation is why your prospective client would choose you over your competitors (or the status quo).If you want the sales force to differentiate in a meaningful way, you have to provide them with the differentiation strategy, language, and examples.Effective Sales Interactions: The salesperson sitting across from your prospective client has the greatest impact on the outcome of an opportunity. That’s where you win or lose. You aren’t there when those interactions happen. You need to be certain that each interaction is effective. You need a sales process that moves prospective clients from target to close. Your process needs to create value for your prospective client at each stage of the buying journey. Your salespeople need the mindset, the skill sets, and the tool kits to create the highest level of value. And it’s certain they need business acumen and situation knowledge to create that value. If you want to make your number, it’s improving that you improve the effectiveness of the sales force.Excellent Sales Managers: Generals may provide the vision, goals, and strategy, but it’s Colonels that execute and ensure those outcomes. In sales, that’s the first line sales manager. You need sales managers that are true leaders in their own right. You need to provide them with a model for coaching their teams—and the individual who make up that team. You need to provide them with the space and time to work on the results of each individual, and you need to protect them from serving the organization at the expense of their people. If you want a high performing sales organization, it starts with excellent sales managers. You can’t afford not to have the right opportunities, the inability to differentiate, the inability to create value during each sales interaction, or a leaderless sales force.QuestionsWhat do you provide the sales force in the way of an effective prospecting plan that helps them open new opportunities? How do you help your sales force explain the differences that make a difference for your client in a way that is compelling to your prospective clients? What do you do to ensure that your sales force is improving their ability to create value during every sales interaction?Does your sales force have the first line sales managers that it needs? Are they getting the best performance form their team and each individual team member?

Goal previews the Liga MX weekend… It’s been a grueling week for nearly every Liga MX team. After the tragic earthquake in the center of the country moved Round 10 between Rounds 13 and 14, teams have been cris-crossing the country and trying to stay fresh while also not losing their spots in the table. After this weekend, teams – especially those no longer involved in Copa MX – will be able to return to the comfortable routine of one match a week. This weekend, only the strongest teams will be able to flex their muscle, while others will fall short of their goals. Let’s look at the slate that awaits us:Match of the Weekend … Tigres vs. TolucaThird-place Toluca travels to fourth-place Tigres with each team feeling confident enough that they will take part in the Liguilla but still needing to shore up their positions. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Lyon treble & England heartbreak: The full story behind Lucy Bronze’s dramatic 2019 Liverpool v Man City is now the league’s biggest rivalry and the bitterness is growing Megan Rapinoe: Born & brilliant in the U.S.A. A Liverpool legend in the making: Behind Virgil van Dijk’s remarkable rise to world’s best player Toluca has historically been strong against Tigres, losing just twice in the last 10 meetings. Few teams have gone into El Volcan and come out with a win recently. In fact, no team has done it this tournament with Tigres undefeated in their last dozen home league matches. They’ve outscored teams 31-7 in that time. Toluca needs significant contributions from its attack if the club is going to do anything to end that streak. The good news for Hernan Cristante is that over the past three matches, he’s had six different goalscorers, attack depth that would be the envy of many of the league’s other teams.Tigres haven’t been filling up the net as they often do, failing to capitalize on their chances last week in Leon and scoring just the early goal through Andre-Pierre Gignac in a midweek win over Veracruz. But with Toluca’s back line showing some deficiencies, they’ll have high hopes of again hitting multiple goals. It should be a good contest and one that could repeat itself in the Liguilla if things continue on their current path. It’s a big weekend for … David PatinoDavid Patino has had brief spells in charge of Pumas before but after earning a draw and a victory in his first two matches of this spell as the interim, the coach isn’t being shy about his ambition to hold down the post.”I’m the ideal manager for this project, to be able to capitalize on everything I’ve learned since I’ve was part of the Pumas youth teams, everything I’ve learned from Guillermo Aguilar Alvarez, Miguel Mejia Baron, Memo Vazquez, Hector Sanabria and so many other coaches I’ve had,” Patino said in a news conference.”I hope this can last for a long time. I’m enjoying this,” he told Esto in an interview earlier this week. That enjoyment may only last as long as Pumas are showing good form, which to Patino’s credit they have in both games he’s overseen. Leon was a challenge, but a Monterrey team coming off a loss to Puebla will be a different one. Rayados may have put things in cruise control with their Liguilla spot all but secure, but they are a team whose attack will challenge Pumas’ back line. Patino has whipped that unit into shape, with the defense keeping a clean sheet against both Necaxa and Leon. Rogelio Funes Mori, Aviles Hurtado and Dorlan Pabon are a tougher test to pass.Should Patino’s unbeaten run continue, he’ll have a signature win and more evidence that he’s more than a former great on the field and loyal servant to the team, but also someone who can motivate the current incarnation to reach the heights the club did during his prime. Keep an eye on … Puebla making a push? When Puebla hired veteran coach Enrique “Ojitos” Meza it had one victory in the Apertura and had scored just six goals. Now, La Franja have doubled their victory total, beating leader Monterrey 2-0 during the week after a draw in Meza’s debut. They’ve also scored a pair of goals in each encounter. Is Puebla about to be much better? We’ll see. After topping Rayados, Meza was quick to remind his team and the public that it’s just one match.”They look good and I think they’re aware because the large majority of them have important experience, so they know this only was one good victory,” Meza said. “It was an important victory … but we’ve only taken a step.”Will it be one step forward two steps back for Meza’s men when they travel to meet Pachuca this weekend? What would even constitute a resurgence for Puebla? A draw would count as progress. Pachuca has lost just once this Apertura at the Estadio Hidalgo (giving Chivas their only victory of the tournament, oddly enough). If Puebla is able to get all three points, Meza’s status as a miracle worker will be confirmed. More likely, Puebla will grow slowly under the manager – if the club is able to capture the momentum of a strong first week at all.Quote of the Week “Recently, Tigres is one of the biggest teams in Mexico for the consistency of play, results, international competition, in terms of fans both at home and away. I think if you had to reconsider this list of ‘grandes’ if you wanted you’d have Tigres in the first or second spot.” – Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel GuzmanTigres may not have the heritage of Mexico’s four grandes: Club America, Chivas, Cruz Azul and Pumas. They may not have as much sustained success as those teams can point to in their past. But it’s tough to argue with the Argentine shot-stopper that Tigres have been one of the best teams in the league and boasted one of the largest fan bases in the recent past. They’ll look to top Toluca this weekend to keep padding that resume.
