“If the government can win elections from its own popularity why are they taking UNP MPs when an election is near? This shows the bankruptcy of the government. The government feels by taking our MPs and trying to demoralise us temporarily is the only way to try and win an election,” he said. The United National Party (UNP) accused the government of making huge financial offers to make UNP MPs to join the government.UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said that the government is attempting to weaken the UNP by buying over some MPs. Attanayake said that the SLFP and the UNP are the only two political parties that can form a government in Sri Lanka and with the SLFP now governing the country, it wants to make sure the UNP is weakened in order to remain in power. (Colombo Gazette) Attanayake claimed that some members of the government had told him in Parliament last Friday that the government is fast losing popularity. He said that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party has lost at least 25 percent of its voter base. He said the government will continue to make financial offers and posts to UNP MPs to make them join the government but yet the UNP will remain resolute.
