Coal production decline in Powder River Basin may be speeding up FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享Casper Star Tribune:Warning bells are ringing across Wyoming’s Powder River Basin that the largest producing coal region of the country is in big trouble. One of the largest players, Cloud Peak Energy, is likely facing bankruptcy. A newcomer to coal country, Blackjewel LLC has struggled to pay its taxes despite increasing production, and the total volume of Wyoming’s black rock that miners are estimated to produce – a number that translates to jobs, state and county revenue — keeps going down. After the coal bust of 2015, when 1,000 Wyoming miners lost work and three coal companies went through bankruptcy, a period of stability settled over the coal sector in Wyoming. The idea that coal would slowly decline, partly buoyed up by the results of carbon research, and just maybe an export avenue to buyers in the Pacific Rim, took hold. Wyoming made its peace with the idea that coal’s best years were likely behind her, but that a more modest future for Wyoming coal, with manageable losses over time, was also likely. That may not be the case.Within 10 years, demand for Powder River Basin coal could fall to 176 million tons, said John Hanou, president of Hanou Energy Consulting and a long-time expert on the Powder River Basin. That figure includes Montana’s production and presumes that coal plants in the U.S. are taken offline as soon as they hit 60 years of age. If Wyoming is lucky and gas prices are high, that count could hold closer to 224 million. Or it could be even worse.Economics could push out existing demand even faster, while wind development going up in the Midwest could eat into Wyoming’s coal market in that region. Natural gas prices, high or low, could alter the rate of change in Wyoming’s coal sector.More: Wyoming coal is likely declining faster than expected
High Court Judge, Justice Jo-Ann Barlow on Tuesday sentenced 40-year-old Wycliff Smith also called “Tarzan” to a total of 19 years behind bars after he pleaded guilty to the 2011 killing of Brazilian national, Armando Da Silva.Smith was initially charged for the capital offence of murder but opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter when he appeared at the Demerara High Court on Tuesday. The charge against him detailed that on January 21, 2011, at Moco Moco Mountain Foot, Central Rupununi, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), he killed Armando Da Silva. It was reported that Smith and the deceased, who are known to each other, were imbibing with a group of persons on the day of the incident. However, during the drinking spree, an argument erupted amongst the parties.Smith, who became annoyed, left the location but later returned armed with a shotgun, which he subsequently used to fatally shoot the now dead man, to his chest. After the shooting, the now convicted man dug a shallow grave, in which he buried Da Silva. The matter was reported, and an investigation was launched. Smith was later arrested and charged for the heinous crime. As such, Justice Barlow handed down the sentence and ordered that the years the convict spent on remand be deducted from same.Attorney-at-Law Maxwell McKay represented Smith, while the State’s case was presented by Prosecutor Sarah Martin.
THE Gallagher clan are planning to get together again – bringing hundreds of Gallaghers to Co Donegal in September next year.In this piece for donegaldaily.com Niamh Ni Gallchobhair explains the plans, with the first event next Friday in Letterkenny.Le Niamh Ni Gallchobhair: In order to set the scene for the beginning of the run-in to the 2nd in 2013 we’ve decided to give people a chance to recall the 1st Gallagher Global Gathering in 2007. We plan to have a Gallagher evening in the Station House Hotel, Pearse Rd., Letterkenny, Co. Donegal on Friday the 9th March 2012 beginning at 7.00 p.m.to do just that and more. We will show videos, photographs etc .of that particular week’s events including the section of the ABC News TV programme that concerns the Guinness World Record attempt in Letterkenny. This programme was shown coast to coast (to a potential audience of 200 million!!) a few months after our successful attempt. Did you, your family or friends appear prominently? Come and see.We would appreciate if anyone who has other pieces of video and who would be willing to share it, would contact us ASAP. If anyone has fond memories of events that day or from throughout the following week’s events, that they are willing to share, please forward them by email to the address below. We will also have live music and a bit of dancing and perhaps there might even be a cup of tea and a biscuit. Of course if you are hungry or thirsty for more we’re sure that Brian Gallagher and his staff in the hotel will not see you go hungry or thirsty for long (at a price of course!!!). If anyone has other ideas please let us know via our email address below.During the evening we will also review what has been happening since 2007 and holding a very short AGM of the Gallagher Clan to set it up for the following year. If anyone would like to get involved at any level they are more than welcome to let us know beforehand or on the evening….in fact at anytime. As with all the other events that were held since the first in 2006 (hadn’t I a lot more hair then!!!), we hope those who attend will have a great night of fun, frolics and friendship, though it will also be a night to remember those who attended events in 2007 and who are no longer with us.I should say of course that this will be an evening for all Gallaghers and their friends and not alone for those who attended 2007. There will be plenty of fun and items of interest to all. So let you all come out and enjoy a great nights craic (and we don’t mean the powder version!!). That will set the trend for the next 20 months or so leading into September 2013. It’s your party so let’s have your ideas. To add to it all those who attend will be entered into a draw for an original copy of the Guinness World Record certificate that was presented in 2007. This draw will take place on the night.Email to firstname.lastname@example.org or text + 353 87 6680593 for further information or to help in any way.
