Linking the flavours of the Caribbean through the region’s music and sport and arguably its most recognisable face – Usain Bolt – telecommunications giant Digicel yesterday launched the Bring the Beat campaign, which will be a key part of the company’s promotion leading to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The event, with Bolt himself as the special guest, was launched at the Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel in Kingston. Bring the Beat aims to celebrate the Caribbean’s culture and features its own theme song, performed by Trinidadian Machel Montano featuring Jamaica’s Tessanne Chin. The song will have variations which will be used in other Caribbean territories, featuring artistes from those particular islands, according to Digicel Group’s director of marketing, Peter Lloyd. “Music and sport have the power to bring people and nations together, and that is exactly what we are about. We will use beats, music, rhythm and talent to connect the world to our athletes no matter what flag they compete under,” Lloyd said. CARIBBEAN VISITORS Journalists and children from several Caribbean islands, including Antigua and Barbuda, Cayman, Montserrat, St Kitts & Nevis, St Vincent & the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago were brought in specially for the function, with the children acting as young reporters and invited to pose questions to Bolt, who responded with his usual aplomb. The reigning Olympic 100m and 200m champion was put in the hot seat and interviewed by Jamaican primary schoolgirl Naleighna-Kae McLean who asked the athlete a variety of questions ranging from his taste in food, to his relationship with his coach, Glen Mills. Meanwhile, sports fans, through Digicel, will have the opportunity to win tickets to various sporting events this summer, including NBA games, Caribbean Premier League cricket and the Olympic Games track and field programme. The event was broadcast live throughout the region on Digicel’s cable television arm, SportsMax.
10 10 The window might not have opened yet but we are well into the transfer season with a number of deals already being completed. This summer represents an important period for Manchester United as they look to improve their squad to challenge at the top end of the Premier League as well as coping with Champions League demands. The arrival of Swedish defender Victor Lindelof from Benfica has already been confirmed but a number of other players are likely to follow him through the door.In this round-up talkSPORT have gone through the Red Devils’ top transfer targets to see what the current situation is.Scroll through the gallery above to take a look at the latest United transfer stories. Jordi Alba (Barcelona) – Although he is satisfied with Luke Shaws progression, Mourinho could well be on the lookout for a new left-back. Apparently the United manager has targeted Barcelona man Alba as his preferred option but a deal looks difficult to complete. Though Alba faces competition at Barcelona in the form of Lucas Digne the ex-Valencia man is believed to want to stay and fight for his place. Alvaro Morata (Real Madrid) – The striker has reportedly left his Ibiza honeymoon to hold discussions with his club Real Madrid about a move to United. The 24-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to join Jose Mourinho, who managed him at Real, and it is thought his sudden departure from Ibiza means a transfer should be completed in the next 48 hours. Morata returned to Real Madrid last summer after spending two seasons with Italian giants Juventus but had to play second fiddle to first choice Karim Benzema. If he is to stake a claim as his countrys number one striker at the 2018 World Cup a move away might be whats required. Nemanja Matic (Chelsea) – The Serbian midfielders move from Chelsea to Old Trafford looks like it will be completed very soon. United will most likely fork out £35million to reunite Matic with Mourinho as the Blues are on the verge of signing Monacos Tiemoue Bakayoko. Matic has won two titles at Chelsea, since he was bought back from Benfica for £22million in 2014, but was also one of the worst performers as the Blues suffered a slump in the season that saw Mourinho sacked. 10 Gianluigi Donnarumma (AC Milan) – After rejecting a new contract at AC Milan it has been a funny old time for the young goalkeeper. Italy are now out of the Under-21 European Championship but, on the weekend, Donnarummas agent Mino Raiola activated his twitter account for the first time in a year to hit back at the goalkeepers haters. On Sunday night the 18-year-old posted on Instagram saying he intended to stay at San Siro but, shortly afterwards, it was deleted and the player claimed he had been hacked. Should David de Gea leave Old Trafford the young Italian would be a prime contender to replace him as number one. This strange story is sure to develop further in the coming weeks. 10 Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) – Understandably, once it was reported that Ronaldo wanted to leave Madrid, United became automatic favourites to sign the 32-year-old courtesy of his previous ties with the club. However, the most recent news suggests Ronaldo will not be leaving the Bernabeu after Real President Florentino Perez admitted that while the player was angry he expected him to stay put. Ivan Perisic (Inter Milan) – Inter are said to have offered the 28-year-old a pay rise to ward off any interest from United. However, the Croatian winger is thought to be sold on the idea of joining up with Mourinho and moving to Old Trafford. United have reportedly had a £35million bid for Perisic rejected by the Italian club who are supposedly want around £44million. This looks like another deal that should be completed relatively soon. 10 10 10 10 Fabinho (Monaco) – Even though the deal for Nemanja Matic looks to be almost completed it is believed United would still pursue Monaco-man Fabinho. The defensive midfielder, who can also play at right-back, is much admired and the club hierarchy would be very keen on getting a deal done if it was possible. While this transfer looks like it could happen Fabinho will only depart for a hefty price tag. James Rodriguez (Real Madrid) – Another Real Madrid man in demand is Rodriguez who has fallen down the pecking order under Zinedine Zidane. The Colombian was a big money signing after his star performances at the 2014 World Cup but he hasnt been able to deliver consistently for Los Blancos. Reports suggest that AC Milan have pulled out of the race to sign the attacking midfielder, which could pave the way for United to swoop along with Premier League rivals Chelsea. Rodriguez still possesses talent and playing regular football again would be a hugely attractive proposition for the Colombia international. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Borussia Dortmund) – The Bundesliga hotshot looks set to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer after leading the scoring charts in Germany. Manchester United were thought to be interested in the Gabon international at the start of June, as were rivals Liverpool, but if recent reports are to be believed Aubameyang looks set to complete a whopping £71million move to China. Tianjin Quanjian, managed by Italian defensive legend Fabio Cannavaro, look to be the club that have reached an agreement with the prolific front man. Dont expect to see Aubameyang playing for the Red Devils any time soon. Saul Niguez (Atletico Madrid) – The undoubted star of the Under-21 Euros is a wanted man to no ones surprise. Both Barcelona and Manchester United are said to be interested in the 22-year-old Atletico Madrid man but Saul has categorically said he isnt going anywhere. With Atletico about to be hit by their transfer ban the young starlet doesnt want to leave the club in the lurch by leaving. This might be a deal for the future but not in this upcoming window. 10 10
