New York Launches Events Division

New York magazine announced today the launch of an events division, New York Events, to produce consumer and trade show events in the New York market.The goal is to attract new business and sponsorships from Fortune 500 companies, according to publisher Larry Burstein. Sona Hacherian, executive director of creative and marketing services, will oversee the new division. first_imgElliott Wilson, the former editor of XXL, the Source and others, is prepping the launch of Rap Radar, a Web site he says he’d like to see become the Huffington Post of hip-hop, a platform artists and producers can use to sound off on music, politics and culture. Wilson has a reputation for being outspoken. And given his reported tendency toward rants, when I spoke to Wilson yesterday, I found him to be surprisingly level-headed about everything, from the state of print (“If you’re a magazine, in this climate, you have to prove your value”) to the Web (“in the climate we’re in, launching this way makes the most sense”) to business (“creative people have to put their business hats on now … [the recession] is forcing all of us to grow up”) to marketing (“I’ve been doing the legwork on Facebook and Twitter”), branding (“we’ll do Rap Radar magazine, Rap Radar socks, lunch boxes, whatever”) and need for community (“Right now, the goal is to build a brand”).Once the ad-supported site is up and running, Wilson plans to invite artists and producers to post entries, Huffington Post-style. “If Jay-Z wants to express his feelings about Obama, there’s not really a forum where he can do that right now.” Whether or not he’s successful remains to be seen. Former Owner Buys Back Sarasota Gulfshore Life Magazines

first_imgCurtCo Publishing has sold Sarasota and Gulfshore Life magazines to Dan Denton, who sold Gulfshore Media to CurtCo in 2004.Financial terms of the deal, which closed late Thursday afternoon, were not disclosed.In connection with the acquisition, Denton has formed Gulfshore Media LLC which is headquartered in both Sarasota and Naples, Florida. The new company will maintain many of the magazines’ current employees. UPDATE: Chris Schulz, who served as president of Gulfshore Media under CurtCo, tells FOLIO: that he will assist with the transition for about a month on a consultancy basis but will leave the company after that time. UPDATE2: Gulfshore Media’s creative director and IT manager also will be leaving the company following its acquisition, Denton says. Denton also owns Florida Home Media LLC, which publishes the Homebuyer magazines as well as Orlando Home & Leisure. Florida Home Media COO Randy Noles will serve in the same capacity at Gulfshore Media, the company says.According to CurtCo CEO Bill Curtis, the company is looking to divest its regional magazines in an attempt to “build upon the amazing growth we are experiencing at Robb Report this year. With our nine international editions and our new investment plans for building an exciting array of online initiatives, we have plenty to keep us busy.”CurtCo also is finalizing deals to sell San Diego and Art & Antiques. Diphtheria kills nine Rohingya people

Ted Cruz Leads Beto ORourke 4943 in Quinnipiac Poll

Ted Cruz.A new poll released Wednesday morning suggests a tightening race between U.S. Sen Ted Cruz and U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke.The newly released poll from Quinnipiac University gives Cruz a six point lead: 49 percent of registered Texas voters reported backing the Republican incumbent while 43 percent said they support O’Rourke, an El Paso Democrat. The poll’s margin of error is 3.5 percent. The results are closer than a poll Quinnipiac released in late May, which showed Cruz holding an 11-point lead over his opponent.“U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz has a slight, by no means overwhelming, lead,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac Poll. “Congressman Beto O’Rourke has done a good job making the race competitive. With three months until Election Day, he is clearly in contention. A Democratic victory in the Lone Star state would be a serious blow to GOP hopes of keeping their U.S. Senate majority.”The poll found 50 percent of Texas voters had a favorable view of Cruz while 42 percent had an unfavorable view. O’Rourke, on the other hand, had a 33 percent favorability rating, with 43 percent of voters not knowing enough about the congressman to form an opinion of him.Quinnipiac released its poll just hours after Texas Lyceum released polling that showed the race between Cruz and O’Rourke as in a dead heat.Texas Lyceum showed Cruz having a slim 2-point lead over O’Rourke: 41 percent to 39 percent. Nineteen percent of voters said they were undecided. Cruz’s lead in that poll fell within the 4.67 percent margin of error.“O’Rourke continues to nip at Cruz’s heels, but it’s a long way to go until Election Day,” Josh Blank, Lyceum Poll Research Director, said in a news release. “If this race looks different than the rest, that’s probably because it is because a strong Democratic challenger raising prolific sums of money and tons of earned media.”Even before it was released the Lyceum poll drew skepticism from Cruz supporters. Cruz’s pollster Chris Wilson published an article on Mediumquestioning whether it would be accurate.“Dating back to 2008 the Texas Lyceum has generously given Democrats a massive house effect boost of seven (7!!!) points,” he wrote, adding that the poll has historically overestimated the share of the Hispanic vote.With 97 days before the November general election, both polls revealed good news for Gov. Greg Abbott in his bid for re-election against former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez. The Republican incumbent — who’s sitting on a hefty war chest ahead of November — is leading his opponent by 16 percentage points with 22 percent of likely voters undecided, according to the Texas Lyceum poll. The Quinnipiac poll gave Abbott a 13 point lead over Valdez.And two other Republican statewides – Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Attorney General Ken Paxton – hold 10 point leads over their Democratic challengers Mike Coller and Justin Nelson, respectively, according to the Lyceum poll. Quinnipiac did not poll the lieutenant governor or attorney general’s races.Meanwhile, President Donald Trump is in a less comfortable position among Texas voters. Among those surveyed in the Texas Lyceum poll, 52 percent said they disapproved of the president’s job performance — including 85 percent of Democrats. Eighty-five percent of Republicans said they were satisfied with Trump. These numbers are on par with what Quinnipiac found: 46 percent of Texans said they approve of the job the president is doing, while 49 percent disapprove.In its news release, Texas Lyceum said its poll was conducted via a telephone survey of adult Texans. Comcast Boys Girls Clubs Create TechSavvy Seal for Youth

These children are no strangers to using smartphones, electronic tablets and computers as tools for learning and communicating. Google is the cure for this generation’s inquisitiveness,  and sharing thoughts, photos and ideas through social media is like second nature.On Nov. 13, Comcast partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington to introduce the “My Future,” initiative, which wasdesigned for youth at the Richard England Clubhouse in Northeast, D.C.  The clubhouse is located in Ward 7 and is historically known as having one of the highest African-American populations and most under-served residents in the city.Comcast provided the non-profit organization with $100,000 to fund the clubhouse’s fully renovated technology center.“We are worried about students starting out behind and not being able to catch up,” said Charisse Lillie, vice president of community investment at Comcast and president of the Comcast Foundation, in an interview with the AFRO.Boys and Girls Club staffers, community leaders, Comcast execs and media personalities celebrate the launch of Comcast and Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s new technology initiative.The initiative, which is part of a five-year partnership between the two entities, reaches nearly 4 million youth in over 4,100 Boys & Girls Clubs across the country. Out of the 12 clubhouses in the D.C. metro area, only one was chosen as an anchor for the project.“We have need here, why shouldn’t we do it here,” said Pandit F. Bryson Starts Youth Sports Coalition to Improve PG County Athletics

Bryson has put his money where his money mouth is by creating the County’s Scholastic Sports Awards Banquet and has now begun a new initiative designed to improve the quality of youth and participatory sports.Dr. Bryson’s latest cause is the creation of the Youth Scholastic Coalition, designed to support and advocate for the activities kids participate in while collaborating with the scholastic support network for young athletes throughout Prince George’s County. Building bridges for youth and scholastic sports athletes with an academic support network has been a passion for the longtime podiatrist since his days as a baseball dad when his son was growing up and competing in Accokeek.The PG Youth Sports Coalition hopes to improve the quality of baseball field throughout the county. (Courtesy Photo)During that time Dr. Bryson built a relationship with St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Fort Washington. For three years youth baseball players from the District and Prince George’s County participated in an academic development program that served as the genesis for the establishment of the coalition. They competed on the field while “barnstorming” throughout the DMV for games during the summer.However, the players also participated in a Scholastic Aptitude Testing Program at the church for 12 weeks over three years. The synergy between the athletics and academics for that group of players helped prepare them for the road to college. Several players part of the initial group would head to schools such as the U.S. Air Force Academy and Morehouse College to pursue their college degrees not just as athletes.“Sports is one thing, but academics will carry you which is what we’re trying to stress,” Bryson told the {AFRO}. “It was a lot easier to get the kids to participate in the learning phase when their peers were a part of the program.”There are many organizations in the community that provide academic and athletic options for youth as individuals and the Coalition is working to connect students with groups that will able to provide additional information and services. For example, organizations with athletic–based programs can expose their participants to services offered by an academic-based program. Those programs can include everything from college preparatory test tutoring to advising families about the NCAA eligibility clearinghouse requirements for potential college student-athletes.“Most groups are focused on the specific activities of their respective organizations, but the Coalition’s focus is on addressing issues that concern everyone,” Bryson said. “The basic premise of establishing the Coalition is the belief that collectively, organizations can be more effective in addressing concerns and issues that have an impact on the community, if there is a positive atmosphere of collaboration.”The Coalition is also serving as the advocate for the various needs related to youth sports programs in P.G. County. The Coalition assists by lobbying to improve facilities and interacts with various state and county officials to engage them in addressing issues of concern for high school sports participants as well. In addition to providing academic support and access to potential scholarship opportunities, one of its goals is to make access to quality fields a priority for all sports participants.The greatest challenge that faces the Coalition is developing corporate partnerships to help sponsor the programs Dr. Bryson and his group are working to establish. Grantors typically look favorably on civic organizations that partner with other groups to address community needs and services. The Coalition helps facilitate these partnerships.“We are aware of the various needs related to youth programs,” Bryson said. “We are working to identify grant-funding sources from various government and non-profit organizations.”last_img read more

Performer Shares the Evolution of Black Women Through Touring Solo Show

Editor. mgreen@afro.comBlack Girl Magic might be a newer hashtag on a social media, but it’s not a new concept and the historicity of the term becomes apparent in Morgan Avery McCoy’s touring one-woman show, “Evolution of a Black Girl: From the Slave House to the White House.”  An excerpt from “Evolution of a Black Girl: From the Slave House to the White House,” will be featured as part of the Virginia Black History Association (VaBHMA) Gala on Feb. 23 at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner Hotel.For the Newport News native and Richmond-based artist, McCoy is excited about getting an opportunity to be featured at the 19th annual VaBHMA gala, which has gained quite a lot of popularity throughout the years in her state; yet “Evolution of Black Girl: From the Slave House to the White House,” is not a new show, but has been an evolving project due to her love of history, storytelling and informing.Morgan Avery McCoy will be performing an excerpt from “Evolution of a Black Girl” From the Salve House to the White House,” on Feb. 23 at the Virginia Black History Gala AssociationA self-described storyteller, McCoy began her professional artistry as a teenager.“I started as a historical interpreter and also as a solo performer when I was 16.  I’ve always been a historian.  I love history- specifically African American history.”As a debutante at 16, she was created a monologue, “A Tribute to a Queen,” in honor of Coretta Scott King, for her debutante ball.  That performance went so well she began gaining traction as someone who could do historic interpretations of powerful women, and from that “Evolution of a Black Girl: From the Slave House to the White House,” was born.“’Evolution of a Black Girl: From the Slave House to the White House,’ is a one-woman show that chronicles the history of the African American woman from the 1600s in Africa to present day,” McCoy told the AFRO in an exclusive interview.She began touring her one-woman show on the church and college circuit over three years ago particularly after legendary actor Lou Gossett Jr., took notice of her andshe was selected to take the play to 30 colleges through the Association for Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA).“I reached out to Mr. Gossett who has a foundation called the Eracism Foundation, with the whole focus of erasing racism and creating programming that would help in that regard.  And I shared with him what we were doing, how these 30 colleges wanted to bring me, at mostly predominantly White institutions, wanting to share with their students about cultural inclusion- really starting the conversation- which lines up with what he desired to do.  And Mr. Gossett was so gracious to tell me that he’d co-sponsor our travels,” McCoy said.  “He handled us getting to all those places and hotels to stay there, and it was such a blessing.  It didn’t stop there.  He was our co-sponsor for 2015, but then allowed me to be an ambassador for his foundation and also a mentor to me.”She is continuing to tour her show years later, which led her to the VaBHMA gala on Feb. 23.The artistic historian pulled from Black women throughout time as her inspiration for the one-woman show.“I portray 12 characters and we go throughout the eras and we deal with issues such as colorism, sexism, understanding your identity, third generational households, post reconstruction.  We just really address various topics within these 12 characters.  I portray Michelle Obama at the end, Madame C.J. Walker, Maggie Walker, Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King- just a plethora of women who have contributed so much to our society.  And in addition to these women, I also play some fictional characters as well, but they’re based on historic truths.”McCoy seeks to motivate audiences through the stories of the women in her show.“The whole concept of the show is to show how these women were resilient, despite the obstacles that they faced, they were able to overcome those obstacles.  Their stories are just naturally inspiring, and so I want to have an opportunity to be on stage to share their stories in a creative way.  It invites an opportunity for the audience to say, ‘Man, if they achieved all this during a time where they couldn’t even vote, look at what I can do.’ So that’s really the desire- to really inspire to overcome their own personal obstacles,” McCoy explained to the AFRO.The storyteller said through all her work she hopes to, “be a voice for the voiceless, inspire the hopeless and educate the uninformed.”last_img read more

Another way for stellarmass black holes to grow larger

first_img , Astrophysical Journal , arXiv A trio of researchers with The University of Hong Kong, Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics in Taiwan and Northwestern University in the U.S., has come up with an alternative theory to explain how some stellar-mass black holes can grow bigger than others. In their paper published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, Shu-Xu Yi, K.S. Cheng and Ronald Taam describe their theory and how it might work. The sixth was attributed to neutron stars merging. As part of their studies of such detections, space researchers have been surprised by the size of the stellar-mass black holes producing the gravity waves—they were bigger than other stellar-mass black holes. Their larger size has thus far been explained by the theory that they grew larger because they began their lives as stars that contained very small amounts of metal—stars with traces of metals would retain most of their mass because they produce weaker solar winds. In this new effort, the researchers suggest another possible way for stellar-mass black holes to grow larger than normal.The new theory starts out by noting that some supermassive black holes at the hearts of galaxies are surrounded by a disk of gas and dust. In such galaxies, there are often stars lying just outside the disk—stars that could evolve to become stellar-mass black holes. The researchers suggest that it is possible that sometimes, pairs of these stars wind up in the disk as they evolve into black holes. Such stellar-mass black holes would pull in material from the disk, causing them to grow larger. The researchers note that if such a scenario were to play out, it is also possible that the two merging stars could wind up with a synchronized spin resulting in a stellar-mass black hole that produces more gravity waves than if the spins had not been synchronized, making them easier for researchers to spot. The existence of such massive BHs suggests that extreme metal-poor stars are the progenitors. An alternative possibility, that a pair of stellar mass BHs each with mass ~7 M ⊙ increases to >20 M ⊙ via accretion from a disk surrounding a supermassive BH (SMBH) in an active galactic nucleus (AGN), is considered. The growth of mass of the binary and the transfer of orbital angular momentum to the disk accelerates the merger. Based on the recent numerical work of Tang et al., it is found that, in the disk of a low-mass AGN with mass ~106 M ⊙ and Eddington ratio >0.01, the mass of an individual BH in the binary can grow to >20 M ⊙ before coalescence, provided that accretion takes place at a rate more than 10 times the Eddington value. This mechanism predicts a new class of gravitational wave (GW) sources involving the merger of two extreme Kerr black holes associated with AGNs and a possible electromagnetic wave counterpart.
