Thirty minutes east of Galle, Cape Weligama inhabits 4.8 hectares atop a promontory rising 40 metres above the Indian Ocean, with stunning panoramas that complement the 39 private retreats designed by one of Asia’s most celebrated architects, Lek Bunnag.Following the first full winter season at Cape Weligama, the resort has embarked on several exciting projects that will be launched its second anniversary this October.1. A new spa with two double and two single treatment rooms is to be developed and will be rolling out a new menu including treatments in conjunction with the Parisian Thémaé tea-based beauty brand.2. An “Ayurveda Taster” programme with the neighbours on the beach, Barberyn Beach Ayurveda Resort, Weligama. Ayurveda is one of the oldest forms of medical science known to man, originating 5000 years ago. It is a way to a healthy and long life and can complement modern medicine. Guests choose three-, five- or seven-day programmes, staying at Cape Weligama and walking across to Barberyn for a 10am – 4pm daily Ayurvedic programme.3. A new shop at Cape Weligama will feature carefully curated, uniquely Sri Lankan products: teas, spices, cinnamon, tropical clothing, books, beauty products and chinaware.4. The appointment 0f Peter Kuruvita, the award-winning chef and restaurateur from Sydney, as the culinary consultant. Peter is revamping the resort’s menus to create special experiences for each location in the resort.5. The naming of the rooms is changing from Residences and Master Rooms to Villas and Suites for clarity.6. All guest bathrooms are being air conditioned.7. The Taylor living pavilion will be reborn as the Cape Colony Club, reminiscent of a 1920s tropical speakeasy with a selection of special cocktails that focus on rum, gin and arrack. The Moon Bar will be positioned as a Sports Bar with a pool table, table tennis, games on the big screen and a deck for sundowners.11. The resort has started work on a village community centre at the back of the resort that will be operated with assistance from the parent company Dilmah’s MJF Foundation. Ten per cent of the hotel’s profits before tax go towards the MJF Foundation. At this centre, which guests can visit, English classes, IT classes, programmes for mothers and general awareness programmes will be provided.12. Connected to that, plans are underway to develop a surfboard-making factory with Peter Kuruvita and top Aussie surfer Thomas Bexon. Village youths will be trained to make high-quality boards for sale to the booming surfing market in the region; all profits will go to the community centre.13. A Beach Club, a few metres away from the surf, is being designed.14. A signature Cape Weligama whale-watching experience is to be introduced. Twice a week from December the resort will deploy a catamaran for an exclusive seven-hour whale-watching exploration. Apart from the whales, guests go snorkelling, boogie boarding, stand-up paddleboarding and have a gourmet packed lunch in a secluded cove.Go back to the e-newsletterrlast_img
